On Tuesday, November 9, the Storm Lake Elementary School Staff collaborated with outside service providers and Storm Lake businesses such as Buena Vista University, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency, Sugar Bowl Gift Shop, Brown's Shoe Store, and the Storm Lake Fitness Center, to provide a Family Literacy Night for our students and their families. We had a great turn-out in that 300 students and their families came to the event held in the gym, commons, media center, and kindergarten shared neighborhood areas.
Participants enjoyed aerobic exercises and an obstacle course in the gym, and in the commons they learned about healthy food choices and made a healthy snack. Engaging math problems featuring Cognitive Guided Math Instruction practices by our teachers were shared in the media center. In the kindergarten shared neighborhood area, computer URL links for parent-child literacy activities and a Kindle demonstration was presented. Throughout the evening, groups of students and their parents migrated between the four sites and had a great time. Periodically throughout the evening participants listened carefully to hear if their ticket number was drawn for one of the many door prizes provided. When it came time to go home, students were given bottles of water, pretzels, and a new book to take home to keep for their very own! Many parents and their children shared that they had a really good time. We thank all the service providers, area businesses and our school staff for their efforts in providing literacy activities to the whole family!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Our Parent-Teacher Conferences were held the week of October 25-29, 2010. Our staff worked hard to provide an avenue for parents and/or guardians to confer with teachers and staff regarding their students and how they are doing in our elementary school. Parents not only met with teachers and staff, but were encouraged to look at student work that was displayed throughout the building.
During this week, we also had a book fair in our media center where the theme centered on "Heros". Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our library staff, the book fair was enjoyed by all and deemed a huge success.
Our local fire fighters shared information about our fire department and their state-wide smoke detector program, as they are providing free smoke detectors to all families. Our fire fighters displayed one of their fire trucks in the drive in front of our elementary school which generated much interest with our students. Families were encouraged to stop by the display table and sign up for the smoke detector program. It was very positive to have our fire department raise awareness in providing safety to our community.
